Grace and Shelly’s Cupcakes earns thumbs up from ‘Cake Boss’
Grace Bolen of Grace and Shelly’s Cupcakes with ‘Cake Boss’ Buddy Valastro
What was just another Friday turned into a rare chance for local cupcake maker Grace Bolen to showcase her talents for one of the baking world’s biggest personalities.
Bolen, co-owner of Grace and Shelly’s Cupcakes, was manning the company’s Naples location on Fifth Avenue South earlier this month when Buddy Valastro of TLC’s “Cake Boss” strolled in with his wife and a friend.
“He looks exactly like he does on TV, minus the chef’s coat,” Bolen laughed. “I recognized him right away.”
Valastro, who popped in with no warning, told Bolen he was in town visiting friends. He enjoyed cupcakes and coffee on the bakery’s patio, and signed autographs for a number of fans who recognized the reality-show star as they passed him on the street.
The New Jersey native sampled four of Grace and Shelly’s cupcakes – Key lime, Butterfinger, chocolate-peanut-butter and brown-sugar-caramel. Bolen said he seemed pleased with each.
“He gave us very positive feedback,” she said. “He said the cakes were moist and our ratio of cake to icing was right on. He really liked the ones that were filled.”
The Cake Boss wasn’t Grace and Shelly’s first celebrity client. The company counts Gov. Rick Scott as a loyal customer. Scarlett Johansson and football great Boomer Esiason have also stopped into the shop. Bolen said her cupcakes have gone to events hosted by mystery novelist Janet Evanovich.
That isn’t to say Bolen wasn’t surprised by Valastro’s sudden visit.
“You know, it was so quick,” she said. “I guess I didn’t have time to freak out – which is good.”
