Last week we introduced you to Google Labs; a space for you to experiment with prototypes of some of Google’s wild and crazy ideas and then offer feedback directly to the engineers who developed them.
While there are a lot of cool ideas cooking for your general Google enjoyment, some of our favorite labs are found in your Gmail account. They help make sending, organizing, and prioritizing your emails simpler, and your social networking a lot more fun.
Find your Gmail labs in: options (next to your name at the top right corner of your gmail screen) ->labs. You’ll see all the available labs listed underneath. Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Undo Send
So you compose an email, hit “send” — and then realize you’ve mangled one of your sentences. Don’t panic! With this Google lab, you have a second chance. After you send, you’ll see your usual notification pop up: ‘your message has been sent’ – and since you’ve enabled this lab, now you’ll see the word ‘undo’ next to it. Click it to cancel your message. One warning: you’ll only have a few seconds to hit cancel, so don’t equivocate. Your message will reload as a draft, so you won’t lose any of your info – and you can correct that sneaky sentence before hitting send again.
2. Insert Images
Now you can insert images into the body of your message. Upload and insert image files from your computer, or insert images by URLs. Remember to connect to the internet before using this lab since you can’t access it offline.
3. Canned Responses
If you use several messages regularly, you’re probably tired of writing them out every time. This app lets you save and then send your common messages using a button next to the compose form. You can also automatically send emails using filters – try out the lab to learn more.
4. Custom Keyboard Shortcuts
This handy lab lets you customize keyboard shortcut mappings. You’ll also get a new Settings tab from which you can remap keys to various actions more easily. Very helpful timesaver.
5. Yelp Previews in Mail
For the rating hounds among us, this lab is for you. If you get Yelp links delivered to your email, this app will save you some time. See details of the listing (like phone number, location, rating, etc) without opening extra windows.
6. SMS (Texting) in Chat
Straightforward and to the point: you can now receive and send text messages in Gchat. Happy texting!
